Journal

3rd May 2010
Today, I'm quite happy because in the parents and teacher meeting, my form teacher said about the positive things about me. I thought she would said about the negative things again. But I was wrong. This is a good day...

4th May 2010
Today, it was quite good for my school. But the bad news was I got a bad mark in today's English quiz. But the good news is that now I can play guitar, even though only a little... I'm going to play my guitar this Friday in Music test.

5th May 2010
Today, I got a good news, I got more than 60 in Math quizzes. And today, my guitar skill is going better to sing while playing it. I like it very much. That mean, it's enough for me to practice for playing the song only for 4 days.

6th May 2010
Today, I feel even happier than yesterday. I can play the guitar even better. I love it. It mean, I can perform nicely tomorrow.

7th May 2010
Today is the day I must perform in the Music test. I was happy because the teacher which have the schedule before music came to the class very late, so I can practice again. I was a little bit worry when the test occurred. I worried if I can't play it well. Other students can perform well, even with a short practice, but I can't really perform well, I admit. It was hard to concentrate on 2 things at the same time. I've tried my best.

8th May 2010
Today, I'm happy that I can gather in Monique's house with all the DCP member to do school project. Not all of us that went there doing the school project, but it's okay, we still can chat together. I went home at about 5.30 p.m. I'm very tired today after going home, but I'm still feeling happy :)

A few days ago, Mr. Zhou asked Mrs. Zhou if she would like to go to town with him. He said that they can go about 10 after he had finished putting up those shelves. Mrs. Zhou answer that it was fine. She had some house cleaning to do but she would come along. She had to get Weiwen a present for his birthday and a pair of shoes for herself. But she asked him if they could go after 10 because she needed to finish the washing and cook lunch for Weiwen. Mr. Zhou answered that she did too much for that boy. He say that Weiwen was old enough to get his own lunch. When Mr. Zhou was Weiwen's age, his parents had expected him to do his share of the housework. Mrs. Zhou said that it had been 20 years and things had been changed since then. Mr. Zhou agree that it had been changed but for the worse. Children had been spoiled. They had too many things and they didn't appreciate their parents. Mrs. Zhou told him that Weiwen was a sensitive boy who gets easily upset. But she disagreed with Mr. Zhou because Weiwen appreciated them. Mr. Zhou said that it was only when they bought him toys. Finally he decided to go at 11 if it suits Mrs. Zhou.

Day 1

At 6th April, my class went to Singapore. First, we gather in school and wait for the bus. We went from Bandung around 8 a.m. On the way to Jakarta, we chatted with each other in the bus. The trip wasn’t boring and felt like its only take a few time to arrive. When we arrive at Soekarno Hatta airport, we checked in. After that we have our lunch. We have lunch in Hoka-Hoka Bento restaurant. After we finished, we went to the gate. We were late, so we didn’t have to wait but we must be as fast as we can. After we arrive at the plane, we took our seat and the plane flew. The trip felt not boring and fast too. When we arrive at the Changi airport, the teacher on duty from Anglo Chinese School (ACSI) have waited for us. We went to the ACSI and the boys, Ma’am Lovanka and Ma’am Liani went to the boarding with their suitcases. Ma’am Hartati went there too but she doesn’t bring her suitcase. Meanwhile, the girls were waiting in the bus.

We were talking while waiting in the bus. Not long after that, the boys, Ma’am Lovanka, Ma’am Liani, and Ma’am Hartati went back. After that we headed to the hotel where the girls stay in Singapore. The hotel called “Rider’s Lodge”. It was in a place that not famous. After we arrive, the girls decide our room and our roommate. I was the last student that not yet decided my room and roommate. So, I stay with the last one too, Vania. But the room was for 3 people and we just 2. So, Ma’am Hartati was our other roommate. I got room number 108. We went to check our room and place our suitcase there. My room was very hard to open. After that, we went to have our dinner.

We have our dinner in a mall called “Turf City”. The mall was near to the hotel. I ate fried rice that was delicious. After we finished our dinner, some of us went to a minimarket called “7 Eleven”. I went there too. I bought a teenager’s magazine. After that, the boys went back to the boarding and the girls went back to the hotel.

Day 2

Early in the morning, I woke up and get ready to go to the ACSI. The trip was about 20 minutes. But we were trapped in traffic jams. After we arrive, we must do flag ceremony. The flag ceremony didn’t take a long time like in BPK, but they must do it every morning. After the flag ceremony, the ACSI students went back to their class. We gather to know where our class is. The ACSI have divided us to some classes. One class will be about 3 or 4 students from BPK. I got the 12th class with Sharlene and Ivan. The teacher on duty took us to our class. In the class, we must sit together with the ACSI students. We were in the school until 02:30 p.m. After that we gather in the canteen to decide where we will go next. That day, we decided to go to Orchard to shopping.

After we arrive, we decide our group that must consist of minimum 4 people. My group consist of 5 people. We were Monique as the leader, Michelle, Vania, Cynthia, and me. First we went to Takashimaya mall. We headed to the place where we can buy meat. Vania, Cynthia, Monique and Michelle bought different type of meat. After that, we went to the bookshop. I bought 2 teen magazines and Vania bought a very thick comic book. After that, we went to Lucky Plaza. Michelle and Monique bought a hardcover for their iPhone. After that, we went to ACSI to have dinner. After dinner, we went back to the hotel.

Day 3

On the morning, I woke up and get ready to the ACSI again. But that day, we went earlier because the day before, we got traffic jams. After we arrived, we did flag ceremony again. But after the flag ceremony, we went directly to our class. After the lessons finished, we gather in the canteen and decided to go to Bugis junction.

After we arrive, we decided our group again. My group was the same as the day before. Monique bought a big doll and Michelle bought 2 dolls smaller than Monique’s. I didn’t buy anything, but I took a lot of pictures. After that, we went back to the ACSI to have dinner. After dinner, we went to the church in the school. It’s not Sunday but Thursday. After that, we went back to the hotel.

Day 4

Like 2 days before, that morning I woke up and get ready to go to ACSI. After we arrive, the flag ceremony greeted us again. After the flag ceremony, we went directly to our class. We finished earlier than 2 days before because the class have white space lesson, so we don’t have to be in the class. After that, we gather again in the canteen and decided to go to the Orchard again.

After we arrive, we were so happy because that day, we can take a walk much longer than 2 days before. My group was still the same, but now with additional Kenny, Ivan, and Josef. We went to Takashimaya again because my father asked me to buy him a display dinosaur. After that, I bought a teenager’s magazine again, and Vania bought 2 comic books again. Vania also bought meat again and I bought it too. After that, we took a long walk to a place where we can buy hotdog. We bought a hotdog each but after eating Cynthia and I bought 1 more hotdog. All the girls wanted to eat at the Pizza restaurant near the hotel except me, Vania, and Cynthia. Not long after that, the other girls came back and brought us an 8 slices pizza. We finally eat the pizza. After that, the girls gathered together in my room. But because Ma’am Hartati wanted to sleep, we moved to Alyssa, Sharlene, and Cynthia’s room. Monique and Michelle decided to go back to their room. Yuthaya and Seraphine went back to their room too. Finally Jesslyn went back to her room too. Cynthia was slept and we still talking to each other. After it’s very late at night, we went back to sleep.

After that, we visited Science center. There, we saw a lot of things that related to Science that were wonderful. After that, we went to the Omni Max Theatre. We watched a film about underwater living. It was a wonderful film. The sea lion was so cute. I wish I have one. After that we went back to the hotel.

Day 6

This day, first we went to the Botanical Garden. We saw some different types of plants there. After that we depart to the Sentosa Island. There, we visit the images of Singapore. The place is about the history of Singapore. After that, we went to the Universal Studios. There, we play some games that were like in “Dufan”, but this place was much bigger and much fun. The Universal Studios have some places that were Hollywood, New York, Madagacar, Far Far Away, The Lost World, Ancient Egypt, and Sci-fi city. I didn’t take all the place’s images because the time will be not enough. After that, we went back to the hotel.

Day 7

This was the last day in Singapore. First, we went to the Zoo. We watched an attraction. The attraction was about sea lion. The attraction was fun. We take a tour around the zoo too. After that, we depart to the airport. We ate there and went back to Indonesia. We arrive in Jakarta and went back directly to Bandung. In the bus, we were chatting again. The driver said that we will arrive about 9 p.m., so we decided to have dinner. After that, we continued our trip to Bandung. After we arrived, most of us have been picked up by our family.

Edison, the inventor of light bulbs

Thomas Alva Edison

Edison as a child

Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was a deaf American inventor, scientist and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park" (now Edison, New Jersey) by a newspaper reporter, he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large teamwork to the process of invention, and therefore is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory.

Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S. patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France and Germany. He is credited with numerous inventions that contributed to mass communication and, in particular, telecommunications. His advanced work in these fields was an outgrowth of his early career as a telegraph operator. Edison originated the concept and implementation of electric-power generation and distribution to homes, businesses, and factories – a crucial development in the modern industrialized world. His first power station was on Manhattan Island, New York.

Contrary to popular belief, Thomas Edison was not born into poverty in a backwater mid-western town. Actually, he was born -on Feb. 11, 1847 - to middle-class parents in the bustling port of Milan, Ohio, a community that - next to Odessa, Russia - was the largest wheat shipping center in the world. In 1854, his family moved to the vibrant city of Port Huron, Michigan, which ultimately surpassed the commercial preeminence of both Milan and Odessa....

At age seven - after spending 12 weeks in a noisy one-room schoolhouse with 38 other students of ll ages - Tom's overworked and short tempered teacher finally lost his patience with the child's persistent questioning and seemingly self centered behavior. Noting that Tom's forehead was unusually broad and his head was considerably larger than average, he made no secret of his belief that the hyperactive youngster's brains were "addled" or scrambled.

If modern psychology had existed back then, Tom would have probably been deemed a victim of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and proscribed a hefty dose of the "miracle drug" Ritalin. Instead, when his beloved mother - whom he recalled "was the making of me... [because] she was always so true and so sure of me... And always made me feel I had someone to live for and must not disappoint." - became aware of the situation, she promptly withdrew him from school and began to "home-teach" him. Not surprisingly, she was convinced her son's slightly unusual demeanor and physical appearance were merely outward signs of his remarkable intelligence.

Like Ben Franklin, Thomas Alva Edison was both a scientist and an inventor. Born in 1847, Edison would see tremendous change take place in his lifetime. He was also to be responsible for making many of those changes occur. When Edison was born, society still thought of electricity as a novelty, a fad. By the time he died, entire cities were lit by electricity. Much of the credit for that progress goes to Edison. In his lifetime, Edison patented 1,093 inventions, earning him the nickname "The Wizard of Menlo Park." The most famous of his inventions was an incandescent light bulb. Besides the light bulb, Edison developed the phonograph and the "kinetoscope," a small box for viewing moving films. He also improved upon the original design of the stock ticker, the telegraph, and Alexander Graham Bell's telephone. He believed in hard work, sometimes working twenty hours a day. Edison was quoted as saying, "Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration." In tribute to this important American, electric lights in the United States were dimmed for one minute on October 21, 1931, a few days after his death.

26 January 2009

Today, isn't a nice day. Yesterday, I slept late at night. And this morning, I woke up because of the alarm tone. But I was very sleepy, so I went to bed and sleep again. After about 10 minutes, I realized that I must go to school. So I wake up and wear my uniform. But my mother was angry to me because actually I must wake up earlier than this morning.
In the way to school, my dad was in a hurry. I was afraid but I just could sit still. I was hoping that there will be no accident. And, thanks GOD, I arrive at school savely.
